My sister has a friend that lives in China and she texted her very early this morning asking her what the american news stations were saying about the death toll. She didnt think that she could trust what the Chinese news networks were saying.

Not surprised. China has the Great Firewall, for one thing. You can expect butchering of negative statistics.

I doubt that even we are getting the full story. As massive as it was, 50 deaths seems low, for how tightly packed China is.

I had the same thought last night. The initial estimates of 17 then 50 seemed extremely low

50+ confirmed dead.
71 critically injured (as of BBC 1 hour ago)
at least 700 injured.
That’s a fucking huge amount of people injured.

I want to know what exploded. Oil refinery, weapons depot, gas storage? We all know how it happened. Poor safety and regulations or lack of.

While watching cctv one time the reporter went on this crazy anti American rant, like hilariously over the top and completely lost his shit. They cut away for a sec, and he literally redid his piece and acted like it never happened.

With China’s tendencies to slightly overpack totally legit safe “factories”, I just would think the toll would be higher.

Considering the time and the area that is actually pretty high.

From what Ive read a gas station caught fire and it was next to a chemical plant (wtf) and when the gas station blew it jumped to the chemical plant and that caused a massive boom.

It was a chemical storage warehouse owned by Ruihai International Logistics that stored calcium carbide, sodium nitrate, and potassium nitrate.

that immediate area is nearly all warehouses. So not quite the population density of the factories you’d be thinking about.

being a major port I think it’d operate 24hrs a day.

They are mostly busy during the day, there are exceptions but even a 24 hr facility is bare bones for the night shift.
